A Research on the Effects of Group Art Therapy Using Sipwoodo on Meaning in Life of the Mothers with Adolescents

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of group art therapy using Sipwoodo(Ten Ox-Herding Pictures)on the meaning in life of mothers with adolescents. The participants of this study were 30 mothers with adolescents living in cities in Gyeongi province. They were divided into an experimental group of 15 and a control group of 15. The program ran a total of 10 sessions, once a week, each session 120 minutes long. A pretest was conducted before the start of the program and a posttest after the end of the program. A follow-up evaluation was made one month after the end of the program. The instrument was the Meaning in Life Questionnaire(MLQ) and the Kinetic House-Tree-Person Test(K-HTP). The findings of this study are as follows. First, the experimental group showed significant differences in the meaning in life on the pretest and posttest as compared with the control group. The effects continued on the follow-up evaluation. Second, the analysis on the K-HTP drawings showed an overall advance in the development stages of the drawings and an emergence of positive expressions. Third, the analysis on the change in the participants' sense of the meaning in life showed changes indicate that they made efforts to make a real change in their daily lives. In conclusion, it can be judged that group art therapy using the Sipwoodo which is long Eastern tradition was effective in improving the participants' sense of the meaning in life.
